Thomas Rowlandson – Miseries of Human Life

2 October 2015

New in our collection this extremely rare copy of Thomas Rowlandson Miseries of Human Life. London, R. Ackermann, 1808. 50 handcoloured plates (etchings) in a contemporary half-leather binding. Only a handful of copies of this scarce work is available in public libraries. Our copy is, as far as we know, the only copy available on the market today.

The etchings are issued serially between 1806 and 1808, the final book form appearing to differ considerably in different copies. E.g. the plates in our copy are bound non-sequential and therefore not in the order as described by Abbey J., Life in England in Aquatint and Lithography 1770-1860, 317. Our copy does include the almost always missing plate “Pall Mall”!

The binding is a bit rubbed, but all plates are in excellent condition!

Price: higher price range, details on request. By the way, the original price in 1808: £1, 11s, 6d.
